Vancouver's busiest transit routes have been served by zero-emission electric trolleybuses since 1948. The 244 present trolleys dating from 1982-83 are approaching the end of their life cycle.

The replacement of the existing trolleybus fleet was approved by the TransLink Board in June 2000. After some delays due to funding issues, the process of procuring a replacement electric trolley fleet is currently underway. A "Request for Proposal" was issued recently for 205 40 foot vehicles and 40 articulated vehicles, giving manufacturers the opportunity to bid on the order. It is expected Vancouver will begin receiving its new trolleybuses in about 2005. In addition, the expansion of the trolleybus system is currently underway, with a 0.8 km extension into Stanley Park.
